Llanelly Directory & Local Guide - 1897
James Davies & Co's Llanelly Directory and Local Guide, including all villages adjacent to Llanelly, was published in 1897 at a cost of 3s 6d and is another comprehensive source of local history. The Directory records that the population in 1897 was approximately 27,000 with the number of houses given as 5,400.
The Directory can be seen at Llanelli Reference Library.
Within the pages of the Directory are shown many streets that have long since disappeared – Station Road and Stepney Street are still there but Crooked Road, Marsh Terrace, Custom House Bank, St David’s Lane and Swanfield Place are no longer.
The selection given here is an insight to the occupations of the residents of that era. The proximity to the tinplate works, railway station and coal yard is reflected in the occupations of the residents

Llanelly Trade Directory Advertisements, 1897
The TRADE DIRECTORY published in 1897 is full of information about the people and businesses of the town at the end of the 19th century.
Reproduction of some of the advertisements in this section is poor in some instances as the original documents could not be copied directly due to their fragile nature. However they do provide an insight to products and services available at the time.
