Llanelli - Birth of a Town a CdRom by William and Benita Rees

Hunt’s Directory of Gloucester, Bristol & Welsh Towns - 1849

Llanelly with Pembrey, Burry Port and Neighbourhood

This Directory has been included, even though it is only five years after Pigot & Co’s Directory of 1844, because it was just before the Board of Health took over responsibility for the town’s Local Administration. The Introduction mentions Sir John Stepney 8th baronet, William Chambers (senior) and the dissatisfaction as to the way funds had been spent by the Trustees to the Burgesses and the considerable proportion that had been divided each year between the diminishing number of Burgesses. The numbers had reduced from 156 in 1807 to 26 in 1849.

Charles Nevill (junior) had died in 1845, his younger half-brother Richard Janion Nevill was living at Llangennech Park, Charles William Nevill was living at Westfa, and Richard Nevill was living at Felinfoel House. The Broom family, closely related to the Nevill family, were involved in local businesses as stationers and printers, chemists, and tallow chandlers. Alfred Watney was living at Coalbrook House with his wife Helen Eliza, who was his second wife and the daughter of Alexander Raby (junior) of Brynmor House, Llanelli. They had married 10 August 1848.

The town had two banks, one in Goring Road (then known as Goring Place) and the Savings Bank which was situated in Park Street. The Dafen Tinplate Works was listed and two tinplate workers living in Spring Gardens and Market Street. William Chambers’ Pottery was listed as Earthenware Manufacturer and newcomer William Newark was a China, Glass & Earthenware Dealer from Swansea Road.

Coaches travelled between Carmarthen and Swansea, the Llanelly Railway and Dock Company trains operated three to six times during the day at uncertain times and either the Henry or the Emily sailed to Bristol weekly and once a fortnight the Alexander or the Kate sailed to Liverpool.

Llanelly is a parish, borough, market town and sea port in the commott of Carnwallan and lordship of Kidwelly, county of Carmarthen, 216 miles W by N from London, 14 S S E from Carmarthen via Pontyates and Minke, but 17 via Kidwelly, and 11 W by N from Swansea; situated on an estuary, formed by the Burry river and the Bristol channel. The town stretches over an extensive area on the river’s northern bank, and the houses are mostly of modern erection, although some few old fashioned buildings yet remain. Near the church, in the centre of the town, is a fine old mansion formerly belonging to Sir John Stepney, Bt., who, for many years in the reign of George III, was ambassador to the courts of Dresden and Berlin during the time of Frederick the Great. In the year 1827, it came into the possession of its present occupier William Chambers, Esq., who is lord of the layer, a very large landed proprietor, and owner of the fisheries of the rivers Dafen, Dulais and Llieda.

Llanelly has within a few years increased from a comparatively insignificant place to a town of commercial and manufacturing importance, for which it is indebted to the vast stores of mineral wealth that abound in the vicinity, as well as to the advantages of its maritime situation, and to the large floating accommodations which have been provided for ships of from 100 to 1,000 tons burthen.

The principal article of export is coal, which is of fine quality (Llanelly and its vicinity have long been noted for the excellent quality of their bituminous or binding coal; veins of coal have also recently been discovered, possessing the peculiar quality of burning, in great degree, free from smoke or sulphur; these coals are consequently in very extensive request for brewers, distillers, steam-boats, &c. Veins of excellent anthracite coal, culm, and fire-clay are also in full course of working.” Llanelly Tide Table for 1849), and there are also exports of manufactured copper, copper sheathing, lead-ore, pig-lead, sheet-lead, lead-pipe, tinned iron-plates, fire-clay, &c., and imports of copper-ore, lead-ore, iron, tin, &c. A great and increasing trade is carried on between Llanelly, Swansea, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Cornwall and Devon, in the various branches of goods, wares, and general provisions, corn, flour, &c.

Trading-vessels sail regularly to Bristol and to Liverpool and two powerful steam-tugs are always in readiness to tow vessels in or out of the port. Copper, lead, tin, iron and earthenware are the manufacturers, and the manufactories may be thus enumerated.

The Llanelly copper-smelting works at Sea-side, the proprietors of which, Messrs Sims, Nevill and Co., have lately taken to the Cambrian copperworks, where they manufacture lead on an extensive scale, and the extraction of silver is also successfully prosecuted by this enterprising firm, who employ a vast number of persons. The Dafen tin-works, in the occupation of Messrs. Phillips, Smith & Co., are situated outside the town, and produce considerable quantities of tinned iron-plates.

The South Wales Pottery facing Park Street, belonging to Mr William Chambers, jun. is celebrated for the production of wares similar to those made in Staffordshire.

Near the pottery are three extensive iron and brass foundries, where all kinds of apparatus required for the use of the above and more distant works, and the numerous collieries around, are manufactured. At Sea-side are two ship building yards, and two establishments where iron-chains, chain cables, and anchors are made. The coast, for a circuit of many miles, offers eligible sites for the erection of works, where cheapness of fuel may be an object of consideration.

A regular communication is daily effected from Sea-side to Cross Inn and Cwmamon valley – a district abounding in mineral wealth and producing the so much admired anthracite coal, lead-ore, &c. – by means of the Llanelly railway, a branch out of which is intended from Cross Inn to Llandilo; and there is also a tramway and canal that reaches to Kidwelly. The South Wales railway will intersect the Llanelly railway near the town, and it is generally admitted that when that important line of rail is completed an additional impetus will be given to the improvements of Llanelly.

A new Road to Kidwelly will also shortly be opened; this has been formed by raising an embankment across Llanelly-flats to Kidwelly bridge, and will prove to be a great public convenience, the present Road passing over the steep brow of Pembrey-mountain.

Llanelly, in conjunction with Carmarthen, returns one member to Parliament. It is governed by a portreeve, and an unlimited number of burgesses, who are trustees of valuable estates belonging to the town. By an act of parliament passed in the reign of George III, the profits arising from these estates were to be applied to the improvement of the port and borough of Llanelly. Much dissatisfaction however, prevails as to the mode in which the funds have hitherto been expended, a considerable proportion having been annually divided between the burgesses, whose numbers have diminished from 156 in 1807 to 26 in 1849, although the population has increased in a quadrupled degree. The town is lighted with gas, but has no public supply of water.

There are six county magistrates resident within the district, who hold petty sessions every Saturday, and the steward of the lordship of Kidwelly holds court-leets for the borough in spring and autumn.

The parish church, dedicated to St Eliw, has within the last two years undergone considerable alterations and repairs, which at a moderate cost have rendered the ancient structure both neat and convenient. A portion of the parish has been formed into a district called St Paul’s, and a clergyman appointed, and it is in contemplation shortly to erect a church.

The other places of divine worship are thirteen chapels belonging to the various denominations of the dissenters.

There are schools upon the National plan, and one for Infants. A Mechanic’s Institute, having an excellent and well-selected library, was established a few years since and its success has been gradual but progressive: lectures are delivered weekly throughout the winter months, and it has been found to work beneficially, and contribute greatly to the moral and intellectual improvement of society in general, but most especially to the working classes. The chamber of commerce, which is another public institution, has been of essential utility in the discussion and suggestion of measures for the general improvement of the town and neighbourhood. Llanelly has also its town hall, its custom house, and two market houses; the one built at the expense of W. Chambers, Esq. the other paid for by the burgesses, and both are toll-free.

The markets are well supplied and well attended on Thursday, the chartered day, and a small market is held on Saturday. Fairs, on Ascension Thursday, July 29, September the 30th, and November the 21st.

The parish of Llanelly, besides the borough, contains the hamlets of Berwick, Borough, Glyn, Hengoed and Westfa, which altogether in 1841 contained 11,115 inhabitants.

Pembrey is a village and parish nearly 4 miles N W by W of Llanelly in the same commott and county, situated on the north side of the Burry river, where is a commodious harbour and floating dock, called ‘Pembrey Harbour’. The parish abounds with bituminous coal, but only one colliery is at work, although formerly several were in operation, and extensive iron works, all of which used to ship their product at this harbour. Population of the parish in 1841, 2850.

About half-a-mile to the east of Pembrey is another harbour called Burry Port, which has a wet-dock where vessels of 500 tons register can be loaded afloat. This bustling little port is the shipping place for the collieries and iron works of the Gwendraeth valley, and of the iron works of Trimsaran. The coal from this district is the anthracite, and the iron produced at the Gwendraeth iron works (the property of Messrs. Watney), being made with that peculiar coal, is called anthracite iron, the superior quality of which has gained for it very considerable celebrity. A canal communicates with this important district from the harbour. Copper-works are now in process of erection here for Messrs Elkington, Mason & Co., of Birmingham, which when completed will add greatly to the prosperity of both Burry Port and Pembrey.

Besides the works already mentioned, there are at Loughor bridge, on the Swansea Road, 4 miles from Llanelly, the Spitty copper works, an extensive establishment where silver is also extracted from the ore; and on the Gower coast are the Penclawdd copper-works, a colliery of excellent bituminous coals, and a manufactory producing arsenic and mineral paints.
