John Jenkins Chalinder’s Directory - 1872
This trade directory is a valuable source of information and gives an insight to the people, industries and business in Llanelli during the industrialisation of the town.
John Jenkins Chalinder was the stepson of John Eynon, a Post Master and Innkeeper, who lived at the Thomas Arms. A perusal of the Directory will reveal that John Jenkins was involved in many of the town’s businesses including emigration to America and Insurance.
The Directory shows that in 1872 the Thomas Arms was a Posting House and the Post Office, which housed a Savings Office, was in Vaughan Street. The Thomas Arms was a coaching house at which mail coaches would arrive daily and was the place where their horses would be stabled, fed and watered.
The First Edition was published on 1st June 1872 and was priced at 1s. It was printed by Broon & Thomas of Market Street, Llanelly.
Extracts from Chalinder's Trade Directory of 1872
Llanelly Directory, including the following places:
Llanelly; Burry Port; Loughor; Bryn; Llanon; Cross Hands; Llangennech; Cwmfelin; Llwynhendy; Dafen; Pontardulais; Felin Foel; Pontyberem; Five Roads; Ponthenry; Furnace
Coal was evidently the origin of Llanelly as a port and its new era of existence may with justice be dated from the first shipment of that black but highly prized diamond; “and as each craft arrived the wondering villagers quickly congregated around and often were regaled with the product of the vine in return for the fuel they fetched down along the beach aided by their horses each carrying a few hundred weights, the ballast was thrown out promiscuously on the sand, but more generally beside those streams that now exhibit its traces in hard and firmly bound heaps, then laden with this mineral they traversed the high seas, not to seek but to be sought for by merchants in their native lands, and traffic was with France. Then the little island flourished the Machynys was a smuggler”.
There are at present about 30 collieries in this neighbourhood (besides many smaller pits) all in full work and raising annually it is computed about 850,000 tons of coal; the different qualities of coal they produce are steam coals free burning possessing the rare quality of producing little or no smoke, anthracite, or stone coal, of the best quality and bituminous coal.
The average annual shipments of coal at Llanelly for the last few years amount to about 320,000 tons, the principal trade being with the United Kingdom, France, Spain and the Mediterranean. A large quantity is also sent by rail. The surplus is consumed by the numerous works in the vicinity, including domestic consumption.
The smelting of copper, lead and silver is carried on on a large scale at Llanelly and Pembrey offering employment to a large number of the inhabitants and supporting many other branches of industry. There are the copperworks, large mills where the copper is worked into various forms, such as sheets, rods, pans, locomotive fire boxes &c., yellow metal is also made at these works and rolled into sheets for sheathing vessels.
Owing to the height of the stacks which convey the sulphurous vapours in dense clouds high into the air the disagreeable effects of copper smoke are not felt in the neighbourhood.
