Pigot’s & Co’s Directory - 1844
Pigot’s Directory for 1844 shows that the main streets were Thomas Street, Prospect Place, Church Street, Chapel Street, Hall Street, Belle Vue, King Street, Park Street, Water Street, Mount Pleasant, Ann Street, Swansea Road, Marine Terrace and the districts were Cheapside, Steam Mill, Sea side, the Bryn, New dock, the Wern, Vauxhall, Llanlliedy, Welinrol (Felinfoel), Furnace, Morab, Sandy Gate, Pembrey and Burry Port.
Spellings used here are as they were in the original Directory.
Llanelly, with Loughor, Pembrey, Burry Port, and Neighbourhood
Llanelly is a market town, a borough and parish, in the hundred of Carnwallan county of Carmarthen; 217 miles w from London, 15 s s e from Carmarthen, 11 w by s from Swansea and 8 s e from Kidwelly; eligibly situated on a port or creek of the Bristol Channel; and where the custom-house for the county of Carmarthen is established. Of late years this town has wonderfully increased in importance, both as respects trade and population; and the improvement in its appearance has kept pace with its prosperity.
Many old and unsightly habitations have been superseded by handsome new ones, with ranges of well-stored shops; and two new and convenient market houses have been built, which are well attended on the market days. This town and its neighbourhood has long been celebrated for its bituminous or binding coal, stone-coal, culm and fire-clay, of which large quantities are shipped to various distant parts; and the abundance and excellence of these minerals has induced wealthy and spirited persons to establish copper, iron, lead and fire-brick works and a pottery, upon extensive scales.
The copper-smelting works employ a great number of hands; and there is a manufactory for patent fuel, adapted to the uses of steam packets. These several important establishments are the source from which the present flourishing trade of the port is derived; to accommodate which, four commodious docks have been formed, furnished with convenient loading stages, and the copper-works docks has a wet-dock, sunk to the depth of thirteen feet at the lowest neap-tides.
A communication has been effected with the extensive anthracite coal districts, by means of the Llanelly Railway and Dock Company. At the Llanelly terminus, the company have formed a wet-dock, in which vessels of considerable burthen are enabled to float and load. This dock is also an excellent graving dock, from one end of it a break-water stretches out to a great extent, which enables vessels to ride into perfect safety. Each of the docks has a reservoir for scouring it; and there is also a public reservoir for cleansing the harbour and channel. Two steam-tugs are actively employed in towing vessels and lighters into the harbour.
The town is governed by a portrieve and an unlimited number of burgesses, to whom estates of considerable value belong: the rental of which is directed by act of parliament, to be expended in improving the town and port. Llanelly shares with Carmarthen in the privilege of returning one member to parliament.
A reading society, lately established, is very respectably sustained by an unlimited number of members, and is admirably conducted by a committee, a treasurer and a secretary.
The parish church of Saint Elly, which stands in the centre of the town, is an ancient structure, with a tower. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of Rees Goring Thomas, Esq. There are places of worship for Baptists, Independents and Wesleyan Methodists and schools for infants, and upon the national plan.
The markets, which are exceedingly well supplied are held on Thursday and Saturday, the former being the chartered day and both are toll-free. Fairs, on Ascension Thursday, and the 30th September. The parish of Llanelly (which comprises the hamlets of BERWICK, BOROUGH, GLYN, HENGOED and WESTFA), contained in 1831 7,646 inhabitants; and in 1841 11,115.
Loughor is a borough and parish in the hundred of Swansea, county of Glamorgan, 4 miles from Llanelly on the road to Swansea, situated on the river of its name – which stream is the boundary here of the counties of Glamorgan and Carmarthen – the intercourse between which is maintained by means of a handsome wooden bridge, of considerable length. The smelting of copper was formerly carried on here largely; but now, independent of the coal works the most prominent business is the extensive chemical works of Mr Player, where are manufactured naphtha, sugar of lead &c. Loughor is a contributory borough with Swansea and other places named under that town in returning a member to parliament. Population of the borough and parish, in 1831 945; in 1841 854.
Pembrey is a village and parish, in the hundred of Carnwallan, county of Carmarthen, about four miles from Llanelly. The manufacture of iron was formerly carried on in this parish to a considerable extent, and large sums of money were expended in opening bituminous collieries, and constructing a commodious harbour and wet-dock, called ‘Pembrey harbour’. These collieries have ceased to be wrought for some years, but there is a probability of their being reopened and the harbour brought again into requisition. Population of the parish, in 1831, 2,645; in 1841, 2,850.
About half a mile to the east of Pembrey, another harbour, called Burry Port, has been formed with a floating dock, where vessels of five hundred tons burthen can be loaded afloat. A canal communicates with the Gwendraeth valley, where there are some extensive collieries at work, producing anthracite or stone-coal, culm, &c. At Trimsaran, five miles from Burry Port, on the canal, the Trimsaran Iron and Coal Company have erected iron works and two furnaces are now in blast, producing the so much celebrated anthracite iron. The population of Burry Port is, we presume, returned with Pembrey parish.
