Christmas Evans

Christmas Evans Shop
Christmas Evans and Sons Limited was founded in 1912 by Christmas Evans, grandfather of Vaughan Evans who was proprietor until 2000. The original business was operated from 15 Station Road, when Christmas Evans, with a horse and cart, sold hardware products around the countryside. In 1914 Christmas Evans, Ironmonger and Furnisher expanded his business to include 17 (Corner Shop) Station Road.
The business moved to 6 Cowell Street in 1924, and his two sons David and John joined him in the business. After 70 years in the hardware trade, Christmas Evans retired at the grand old age of 84. His son John died in 1962 aged 50 and his son Vaughan Evans was drafted into the business, from which he retired in 2000.
Extensive modernisation was undertaken at the Cowell Street premises in 1963 which involved a substantial amount of steelwork. At one time Cowell Street was the main shopping thoroughfare, but with the advent of major changes in the town, especially the new town centre, Cowell Street, is no longer the heart of the main shopping area.
