Christmas Evans Ironmongers

Llanelly Mercury, 26th January 1914 - Business expansion

1912 Christmas Evans & Sons Ltd was founded by Christmas Evans, grandfather of Vaughan Evans who was proprietor until 2000. The original business was operated from 15 Station Road, when Christmas Evans, with a horse and cart, sold hardware products around the countryside.

1914 Christmas Evans, Ironmonger and Furnisher expanded his business to include No 17 (Corner Shop) Station Road.

1924 The business moved to 6 Cowell Street and his two sons David and John joined him in the business.

Christmas Evans retired from the business at the grand old age of 84.

1962 John Evans (son of Christmas Evans), died aged 50, and his son Vaughan Evans, was drafted into the business, from which he retired in 2000.

1963 Major modernising work was undertaken at the Cowell Street premises which involved a substantial amount of girder work. At one time Cowell Street was the main shopping thoroughfare, but with the advent of major changes in the town, especially the new town centre, Cowell Street, is no longer the heart of the shopping centre.

2000 Vaughan Evans retired in July 2000 and staff Jeff Curtis, Ross Grant and Jonathan Richards became the new owners trading as Christmas Evans 2000 Limited.
