The Wheel of Industry turns full circle for Llanelli

1950s The "Death Knell" sounded for the town’s Industrial Revolution which had started 200 years earlier when Sir Thomas Stepney, 7th Baronet, negotiated with the new Industrialists, from the already heavily industrialised Swansea and Neath Valleys, who brought investment, technical innovation, and modern mining techniques, with them.

1960s During this decade Llanelli was designated as a redevelopment area, and strenuous efforts were made by the Borough Council to attract new industries, and clear up the industrial dereliction left behind by defunct industries.

1980s Llanelli's Industrial Revolution finally ended in the 1980s, with the closure of Duport Steel, also known as the Llanelly Steel Company and the ‘Klondyke’. Sandy Water Park now occupies the site and is part of the Millennium Coastal Path - a popular attraction for visitor and local residents.
