Notable Churches in and around Llanelli
The information in this section is an edited version taken from Llanelli - Birth of a Town a CdRom by William and Benita Rees
It is thought that about 1780 a small group of dedicated independents established their own meeting place at Capel Als in the Marble Hall area of town. Early records of the small congregation do not exist but when Capel Als came under the ministry of the Revd David Rees, from 1829 to 1869, records show that it went from strength to strength and the small flock grew.
In 1831, two years after the Revd David Rees began his ministry at Capel Als, he rebuilt the small chapel contributing £50 (a substantial sum of money in those days) towards the building expenses. He was a great fund raiser and it is said that when someone saw a painting of him in a shop window, the comment was made that it could not be the Revd Rees because he did not have a collection box in his hand.
