The Life and Times of Rev Ebenezer Morris |
Please contact us for further details Much has been written over the years about Rev Ebenezer Morris, Vicar of Llanelli, but this has been included with the history of others and is mainly concerned with his disputes and court cases. It seems such a shame that the life and times of such a character as colourful as Ebenezer should remain unwritten. This CDRom endeavours to remedy the situation and outline in as much detail as possible, not only Ebenezer but also his wives, children, grandchildren and their descendants. Ebenezer married more than once and a possible bigamist marriage was uncovered, which does not appear to have been mentioned by any local historians. He fathered four children by his first marriage, four by his second marriage and twelve by his third marriage. His first child was born in 1815 and his last child was born in 1858 – a span of forty-three years. Seven of his children died before him; baby Mary Emma died just eight hours old in 1828; his other daughter, also named Mary Emma died in 1838 at the age of 5 months; his son John Bayley died aged 23 in 1840, followed by his daughter Jane aged 21 in 1841 and daughter Susan Gwenllian followed, one month later in the same year. His daughter Elizabeth died aged 31 in 1863 and his son Edward Octavius died of gunshot wounds in 1865, aged fifteen. His son, Samuel Sheppard Oakley, tried to run away to sea when he was young and died a hero in 1893 as chaplain of HMS Victoria which sank off the coast of Tripoli. Many of his children either became clergy or married clergymen and his daughter Georgiana Marrianne emigrated with her husband and family to Australia. Links have been traced to the royal family and Ebenezer’s descendants can be found all over the world. Described as ‘the fighting parson’ he was a larger than life character, a staunch, uncompromising Anglican who feared neither man nor beast. Such were his oratory skills that people came from miles around to hear him preach and on one occasion his congregation was so large, and the ancient parish church packed to full capacity, that the balcony cracked and had to be taken down. Author Kenneth Mervyn Jones of Cardiff, great-great-great grandson of Ebenezer, has compiled family trees of the three marriages and the descendants. The family trees and the history of family members are all included in this CDRom (which is in pdf format), researched by Ken and compiled and edited by William and Benita makes for fascinating reading and is a must for those interested in family history.
