Elm Grove

Also known as Elms Grove

Residents of Elm Grove from 1811-1881

Elm Grove was situated near the river Lliedi, right of the bottom of Thomas Street and was once home to the local gentry.

By 1830 Elm Grove was used as a malthouse and later incorporated in the Buckleys Brewery site and was probably used as accommodation for the brewery manager.

Originally, the Shewen family, relatives of the Shewens of Stradey, lived there as shown by Holden’s Trade Directory of 1811.

By the time the 1841 census was taken, James Buckley, a member of the Buckley family, and a relative of the Nevill family (Charles Broom), were living there. James Buckley aged 20 was not the James Buckley that married Henry Child’s daughter Maria or their son James who took over the brewery when his grandfather (Henry Child) died. This James Buckley who had been born in Oldham was the son of John Buckley (1774-1850) and nephew of James Buckley (1770-1839) the itinerant preacher. His father John was one of the eleven children born to Mark and Alice Buckley of Sholver Moor, Oldham.

Charles Broom was related to the Nevill family through Charles Nevill senior. He was grandson to Charles Nevill senior, through his mother Sarah Willets Nevill who had married Samuel Broom from Kidderminster.

Sarah Broom was the daughter of Charles Nevill and his first wife Sarah Willets.

Charles had other brothers and sisters including Nevill Broom, Theodore Broom, Sophia Broom and Edward Broom.

In 1848 William Bythway came to Llanelli to serve his apprenticeship with Buckleys Brewery and he was one of the residents at Elm Grove in 1851.

William Bythway was still living at Elm Grove when the 1861 census was taken. He fell out with his employer and built his own brewery in the Tyisha district of town and by 1881 he was living with his wife Jane in Mina Street (later known as Queen Victoria Road).

By the time the 1871 census was taken there was another member of the Buckley family in residence at Elm Grove, namely, Joshua Wedge Buckley aged 36, unmarried son of James and Elizabeth Buckley of Penyfai.
