Field House

Field House also known as Glanmor around 1875

The actual date that Field House was built remains known, but it was once home to the Nevill family. Charles Nevill senior and his second wife Martha, who came to Llanelly around 1804, lived at Vauxhall (formerly Lady Mansel’s House) until Charles died in 1813 and Martha tragically died in 1821.

When Charles and Martha settled in Llanelly their son Charles Nevill junior was about 24 and Richard Janion Nevill was about 18 years old. It may well be that Charles and Richard decided to live at Field House from this time.

It is known that by 1811 Richard Janion was living at Field House, where he continued to live after he married Anne Yalden in 1812.

In 1814 Richard Janion Nevill was described as ‘Merchant’ living at Field House and the parish church records show that Elizabeth Colley aged 25 died in November 1819 whilst living at Field House. Elizabeth may have been related to the ‘Colley’ who was one time Butler to the Stepney family of Llanelly House in the latter part of the 18th century.

When Richard’s mother was tragically killed by a coal waggon in 1821 he was living at Field House because his mother had been returning to Vauxhall after visiting him when she was killed. Richard continued to manage the Copperworks following his father’s death in 1813, became a respected businessman and was appointed High Sheriff in 1836. In 1833 he moved to Llangennech Park.

Field House, in the Glanmor area of town, became known as Glanmor House around 1826 but in census returns for 1841, 1861, 1871 and 1881 the house was referred to as Field House.

Richard Janion Nevill's older half brother Charles Nevill junior, married Catherine Caroline Ward in 1823. Catherine Caroline died twelve years in 1835.

When the 1841 census was taken, widower Charles Nevill junior was living at Field House, Box Railway. Simon Mead an accountant for the Copperworks was also living at Field House with his family and servants.

Charles Nevill junior died in 1845 and Field House was probably let out to tenants as the 1851 census shows that only a gardener and carpenter were resident at Field House which was called Glanmore House in the census.

By the time of the 1861 census Field House was in the occupation of William Thomas and his family. Also living at Field House were David Griffiths and his family.

At the end of 1870 William Henry Nevill had decided to move away from Llangennech Park and for a short time the family moved to the former Nevill home at Field House.

Shortly after the 1871 census was taken William Henry Nevill his wife and family moved to Robert’s Retreat, Ferryside, where Rachel died in 1875 aged 46 shortly after the birth of another son.

1873 An Indenture dated 20 June 1873 made between Sir John Stepney Cowell Stepney, Lessor, and Lessees Henry Harries of Water Street, Miner, Thomas Williams of New Dock, Ship Chandler and John Thomas of William Street, Llanelly, Colliery Overman, premises containing 2 roods on the west side of Begin Road being part of Begin in Llanelly (Field House) was leased for 40 years from 25 March 1873.

1895 John Thomas died on 24 February 1895. Field House had been empty for some time and the lessees owed Sir Arthur Stepney £33 12s 6d for arrears of rent. An agreement between the parties surrendered the outstanding term of the lease to Sir Arthur.

1902 Field House was demolished
