Ebenezer Morris was the son of David and Jane Morris who were farmers living at Llandyfriog and he was one of at least five children.
Ebenezer Morris left his mark on the history of the town. He is said to have had a commanding presence and possessed a robust habit of militancy which, was only equalled by the fervour with which he strove mightily against the forces of evil in his cure of souls. Morris undertook restoration work in 1823 and 1844 when the old south porch was removed along with an old three-tiered pulpit.
1754 Around this time Jane — ? was born. She became the wife of David Morris, farmer, and the mother of Revd Ebenezer Morris (Vicar of Llanelli 1820-1867).
1755 David Morris (father of Ebenezer Morris) was born around this time – he became a farmer.
1782 David Morris, older brother of Ebenezer Morris, was born at Llandyfriog.
1790 Ebenezer Morris was born. He was the son of David and Jane Morris, farmers of Llandyfriog.
1802 Ebenezer Morris, son of David and Jane Morris, was baptised at Llandyfriog.
1813 On 28 August the Cambrian announced the Ordination at Carmarthen of Ebenezer Morris and David Evans as Deacons. The Lord Bishop of St David’s held a special Ordination at St Peter’s Church, Carmarthenshire on Sunday night, when Messrs Ebenezer Morris and David Evans were ordained Deacons.
The Parish Registers show that on 2 September Ebenezer Morris married Sarah Williams of Llandyfaelog.
1814 Revd Ebenezer Morris was ordained priest by the Bishop of St Davids and became perpetual curate of Llannon and Llanddarog. He was Rural Dean, Domestic Chaplain to the Earl of Lisburne and wrote Senex and Juvenis on the Church.
1815 On 4 March the Cambrian reported that Revd Ebenezer Morris, Curate of Llandilo-Talybont, Glamorganshire and Officiating Minster of Llanedi, Carmarthenshire, had been licensed by the Lord Bishop of St David’s to the Perpetual Curacy of Llannon, in the latter county, on the nomination of Rees Goring Thomas, Esq., of Tooting Lodge, Surrey.
Sarah Morris, daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah Morris, was born at Llannon on May 29 and christened on 6 July at Llannon Church.
1816 Margaretta Maria Jones was born at Llanfihangel, Cardiganshire. She became the 3rd wife of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
1817 John Bayley Morris was born at Llannon. He was the son of Ebenezer and Sarah Morris.
1819 On 23 October Revd Ebenezer Morris, Curate at Llanelly, carried out his first burial.
On 13 November the first marriage ceremony performed by Ebenezer Morris, was when David Lewis married Hannah Walter.
Revd Ebenezer Morris left Llannon and was succeeded by Lewis Powell.
On 28 December the first marriage ceremonies carried out by Ebenezer Morris at Llanelli Parish Church were those of John Bowen to Ann Rees and John Jones of Llangendeirne to Mary Daniel.
1820 The burial of David Morris, father of Revd Ebenezer of Penalltysgob, took place on 14 March.
On May 17 Revd Jeremiah Davies, aged 69, died at Llanelly vicarage.
When Revd Jeremiah Davies, died he was succeeded by Ebenezer Morris who was presented by Rees Goring Thomas on December 20 1820. Described as a striking preacher and a remarkable man he had previously been the perpetual curate of Llannon and Llanddarog.
On August 27 Jane, daughter of Sarah and Ebenezer Morris, of the Vicarage was baptised.
On December 23 the Cambrian announced that Revd Ebenezer Morris was given the Vicarage of Llanelly. Under Revd Morris’s regime ‘b’ (bachelor) and ‘sp’ (spinster) was rarely used.
1824 Caroline Morris was born. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer Morris and his first wife Sarah. She was baptised at Llanelli Parish Church on 16 April.
The Cambrian reported on September 4 an Action at Carmarthenshire Great Sessions: Revd Ebenezer Morris v Daniel Williams to recover cost of dead horse.
1825 Sarah Morris of the Vicarage witnessed the marriage of Joseph Thomas and Sarah Saunders on 2 October.
1826 Sarah Morris, wife of Ebenezer Morris, died at the age of 37 on May 31. Her obituary appeared on June 3 in the Cambrian: “On Wednesday last at Llanelly Vicarage, in the county of Carmarthen, in the 38th year of her age after a short but severe illness, which she bore with Christian fortitude. Mrs Morris wife of the Revd E. Morris, Vicar of Llanelly. Her loss as an affectionate wife and mother will be long felt by her husband and children”. She was buried on June 5.
In August Thomas Clement Chapel bequeath to David Davies, lay preacher of Capel Als, Llanelli. A Law suit followed and Revd Ebenezer Morris claimed the chapel. Thomas Clement’s remains were reburied at Rehoboeth Chapel in 1863.
1827 The Parish Register of 27 July records that Ebenezer Morris, Clerk and Vicar of Llanelli, married Mary Williams (widow) by licence at the Parish Church. The marriage was performed by J. Lloyd, Curate of Loughor and witnessed by William and Emma Chambers.
On August 4 the Cambrian announced that Revd Ebenezer Morris married Mrs Mary Williams (Mary was the widow of Joseph Williams and her maiden name was Saunders) of the Falcon Inn, Llanelly, on 27 July 1827.
1828 The Thomas Arms was probably built around 1828 when farmers of the parish gave materials for the building, thinking it was going to be a vicarage for the Revd Ebenezer Morris, vicar of Llanelli Parish Church. The farmers, who did not charge for the building materials, were annoyed and frustrated when they realised that the building was going to be used as an hotel for Rees Goring Thomas and not as a residence for their vicar.
Mary Emma was born on July 3. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris and was baptised at the Parish Church on the same day.
Mary Emma Morris, died at the Vicarage when 8 hours old. She was buried on July 4.
1829 On 3 January 1829 an announcement appeared in the Cambrian newspaper advertising the letting of the Thomas Arms. It was placed by the Revd Ebenezer Morris acting as Agent for Rees Goring Thomas. It seems that the first advertisement was not successful and the vicar had to re-advertise in September of 1829.
On April 18 the burial took place of William Williams aged 15 of the Vicarage (he was the stepson of Mary Williams who was the second wife of Ebenezer Morris). His obituary was in the Cambrian of May 2.
1830 John Bayley Morris, son of Revd Ebenezer Morris, witnessed various marriages.
Repairs were started on Parish Church and completed in 1845.
The Cambrian of February 20 reported that the parishioners of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, had succeeded in their in court case about tithes.
1830 Georgiana Marrianne Morris was baptised on September 5. She was the daughter of Ebenezer and Mary Morris (second marriage).
1831 Ebenezer Morris of Llanelly married Mary Parnall of Llanstephan on February 15.
On 22 November Mrs Jane Morris, mother of Revd Ebenezer Morris, was living in a house known as Blaentrossol. She made her Will which mentions daughters Mrs Margaret Jones, Hannah Thomas, Jane Havard and Catherine Thomas, sons Revd Ebenezer Morris, David Morris. Revd Ebenezer Morris was appointed sole executor.
1832 The Thomas Arms was finally leased in January 1832. Apparently, at the initial ‘house warming’ at the Thomas Arms a little too much ‘Cwrw Dda’ or Good Ale was consumed which led to a fracas between the Revd Morris and a Carmarthenshire Magistrate, John Edward Saunders, JP. As a result of the dispute the Magistrate was carried to another room by his friends.
During his time as vicar Ebenezer Morris was involved in various altercations, including a dispute with William Chambers about proposals to widen the road near the church. Morris was a man of great physical strength and was said to be ‘a fighting parson’. In 1832, when he assaulted William Chambers over their dispute, he was fined £20 and bound over for two years to keep the peace. He also had many disputes with the Nonconformists, and one occurred in 1838 when the Llanelly vestry elected John James as churchwarden.
On January 2 Elizabeth Morris was born. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris.
The Cambrian reported on 17 March that Revd Ebenezer Morris, Vicar of Llanelly, had been made chaplain for the Earl of Lisburne
On March 23 Mrs Morris, mother of Revd Ebenezer Morris, died at Cwrrws aged 78. She was buried on March 26.
On May 17 Elizabeth Morris was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church. Elizabeth was born on 2 January 1832 and she was the daughter of Ebenezer and Mary Morris.
The Cambrian July 28 – Carmarthenshire Assizes – “Rex on the prosecution of Wm Chambers, Esq. v Revd Ebenezer Morris of Llanelly.” This was an Assault case tried before a special jury.
1835 On April 8: “Morris, John Bailey o.s. Ebenezer of Llanelly, co. Carmarthen, cler. Jesus Coll. matric. 8 April 1835 aged 17”
Cambrian July11: – “Llanelly Grammar School will be re-opened by Mr E. Morris on 13th July”.
1836 In March 1836 a grand dinner was given by local gentry at the Thomas Arms Inn to John Biddulph junior and other promoters of the intended new railway to Llandeilo. George Bush, described as an intelligent engineer, had arrived in town for the purpose. William Chambers senior presided with John Biddulph and William Chambers (junior) on his right and George Bush and Thomas Morris, a Banker from Carmarthen on his right. The Revd Ebenezer Morris filled the chair at the other end.
On September 12 the marriage of Jane Morris, second daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah Morris to David Lewis (surgeon of Llandeilo) of Bank House took place at Llanelli Parish Church.
The Cambrian of September 17 announced: – “Marriage at Llanelly, David Lewis, surgeon, to Jane, daughter of Revd E. Morris, Llanelly”
1837 November 8: Litigation – Revd Ebenezer Morris Clerk, Perpetual Curate of Llannon in the Consistorial and Episcopal Court at Carmarthen in the Diocese of St David’s against David Jones Church Warden of the Parish of Llannon
Mary Emma Morris was born on November 8. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris.
Mr & Mrs Evans’s School, Wern (National School), was established by Revd Ebenezer Morris.
1838 Mary Emma Morris was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on February 8. A death certificate dated March 29 shows that Mary Emma Morris, died of “inflammation of the lungs”. She was the daughter of the Revderend Ebenezer Morris, Clerk, Llanelly. The informant was John B. Morris of the Vicarage, Llanelly, her brother. Mary Emma Morris, aged 5 months, was buried at Llanelli Parish Church on March 31.
On April 25 Mrs Mary (Saunders/Williams) Morris of the Vicarage and wife of Ebenezer Morris was buried at St Elli Parish Church. Her death was reported in the Cambrian of April 28.
A reading room had been established in the Thomas Arms ceased when there was a dispute amongst the members and the society was dissolved at a meeting held on 2nd July 1838. With Vicar Ebenezer Morris in the chair, a proposal by David Phillips, Esq., and seconded by Henry Thomas, stated “that in consequence of the members being obliged to leave the Thomas Arms Reading Room and also in consequence of the annoyance they have been since subjected to from Richard Edwards, an expelled member of the society, and from the part that the magistrates have taken in the matter of the expulsion of the said member at the Petty Sessions, held at Llanelly on the 30th day of June last, the said society be dissolved, and that such a proportion of subscription paid by the members therefore be refunded to each of them, as the funds will allow, on application to the secretary, and that he be requested to send a copy of this resolution to all absent members.” Before 1840 the Llanelly Reform Reading Room was established at the Ship & Castle Inn (now the Stepney Hotel) in Park Street. The President was William Chambers junior and there is little doubt that plans to establish a Mechanics’ Institute came from this new Reading Society.
1839 May 4: Cambrian report – Ecclesiastical oppression in Carmarthen: David Jones v The Revderend Ebenezer Morris, Vicar of Llannon.
The Death Certificate, dated October 16, of Joanna Morris shows that she died of water of the chest at 2 pm at Seaside, Llanelly, at the age of 39 years. Joanna was the wife of Ebenezer Morris. Joanna Morris was buried on October 20.
November 2: Cambrian obituary – “Death on 16th ult., aged 39 at her father’s house at Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, after a lingering illness, Mrs Morris, wife of the Revd Ebenezer Morris”.
On November 26 Margaretta Maria Jones, daughter of the Vicar of Llangyndeyrn, married Ebenezer Morris at St Peter’s, Carmarthen. Margaretta was his third wife. The Cambrian of November 30 reported: “Marriage in Carmarthen Revd E. Morris of Llanelly to Miss Jones of Llangendeirne and Llandefeilog”.
1840 The marriage took place at St Elli Parish Church on January 18 of Sarah Morris (daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Sarah Morris) and Richard Thomas Howell (son of Elizabeth and Griffith Howell).
January 25: Cambrian Announcement – Marriage of Richard Howell, son of Griffith Howell, Draper, to Sarah Morris, daughter of the Vicar of Llanelly.
On 20 July 1840 a public meeting of friends and supporters of the proposed infants’ school was held. Rees Goring Thomas was in the chair and those present included William Chambers, James Buckley, and Revd Ebenezer Morris. Rees Goring Thomas had given the land in Prospect Place and the school building with accommodation for 250 children opened in 1841.
On August 13 Susan Gwenllian Morris was born. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris.
1841 Susan Gwenllian Morris, daughter of Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris died at the age of 6 months and was was buried on February 9.
On November 28 Ebenezer Morris born. (This a the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris.)
1842 The two amounts granted under the Queen Anne’s Bounty payments namely £800 (1812) and £200 (1825) were invested in Government funds and in 1842 this money was laid out by Revd Ebenezer Morris, Vicar of Llanelli, when he purchased a farm called Blaenant consisting of 52 acres, 1 rood, 22 perches, situated in Llanelly Parish with an allotment of 2 acres, 3 roods, 31 perches on Sylen Mountain

December 22 Jane Morris, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris was born. (She was the second daughter named Jane. The first daughter named Jane was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Sarah Morris and she died in 1841.)
1843 Jane Morris was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on January 19. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris.
1844 David Melvill Morris was born at Llanelly. He was the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris.
David Melvill Morris was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on June 19. He was the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris.
December 21: Cambrian obituary – “Death of infant daughter of Mr Richard Howell, Merchant, Llanelly”. She was the grand daughter of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
1845 Augusta Brudenell Morris was born at Llanelly on September 18. Augusta was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris. She was baptised on October 23 at Llanelly Parish Church.
1847 Revd Ebenezer Morris was named as Guardian of David and Jane Morris’s daughter Jane Lewis who was born in April 1840.
The Cambrian of 18 June announced the birth of Samuel Sheppard Oakley Morris at the Vicarage, Llanelly, to the lady of Revd E. Morris. He was baptised on July 4.
1848 The Cambrian of December 29 announced the birth of Margaretta Maria Morris to Mrs Morris at the Vicarage Llanelly. She was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on January 26.
1849 The parish church was renovated. The vicar was the Revd Ebenezer Morris and the Revd D M Rees was the curate.
1850 The Cambrian of August 2 reported the death of Eliezer Nugent Williams, surgeon of Carmarthen, brother-in-law of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
The Cambrian of August 16 announced the birth of Edward Octavius Morris to Margaretta Morris, the wife of Revd E. Morris. Edward Octavius Morris was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on September 4.
1851 The Cambrian of 14 November announced the birth of Julia Rose Morris to Mrs Morris at Llanelly Vicarage.
1853 On April 5 Eva Hastings Morris was born at Llanelly. She was the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris. She was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on August 1st.
1854 On December 27 Revd Ebenezer Morris made his Will, leaving everything to his wife Margaretta Maria Morris.
1856 On September 6 George Rice Morris was born at Llanelli. He was the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris. He was baptised at Llanelly Parish Church on September 28.
1857 The Cambrian reported on 12 June the success of Revd Morris’s sons due to school of Mr Butler, Thistleboon, Swansea.
On July 17 the Cambrian reported the Cambrian Institute for the Deaf and Dumb Annual Meeting in Llanelly, Revd E. Morris was in the Chair.
1858 Rees Goring Morris was born on July 3 at Llanelly. He was the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris. Rees Goring Morris was the last child of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
On October 12 Stephen Brown, Clerk of Strawberry Hill (Church of England priest), married Georgiana Marrianne Morris of the Vicarage, at Llanelly Parish Church.
On this date also Jane Lewis (grand-daughter of Revd Ebenezer and his first wife Sarah), married her relative Peter Williams, at Llanelli Parish Church – Jane’s mother, Jane Morris, had married David Lewis, a surgeon of Llandeilo in 1836. Jane’s mother died in 1841 at the age of 21.
1859 The last burial at New Dock was that of John Rees. At the funeral on October 23 Ebenezer Morris was assisted by D. Morgan Rees.
1861 Elizabeth Morris, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris, married Edmund Brown, Surgeon and Apothecary, at Llanelly Parish Church on January 22.
Revd Ebenezer Morris attended a reception held in the Thomas Arms after the marriage of Rees Goring Thomas to Emily Nevill, daughter of Richard Janion Nevill of Llangennech, on 18 April 1861.
1862 David Morris, older brother of Revd Ebenezer Morris of Cwrrws, died on March 15 and was buried at Llandyfriog Church – A Grade II listed railed monument at Llandyfriog Church bears inscriptions to David Morris, his wife and children.
On August 22 the Cambrian reported the death at Bryncaerau of Griffith Howell Esq., father of Richard Thomas Howell. (Richard Thomas Howell was the son-in-law of Revd Ebenezer Morris).

Elizabeth (née Morris) Brown (daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris) died on May 20 at Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. She was buried at St John’s Church, Aberdare. Registered on 22 May 1863
Jane Morris, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, married Evan Rowland, Church of England Priest (b 21 July 1837 at Cardigan) at Llanelly Parish Church on September 26th.
On October 2 the Cambrian reported the marriage (by Licence) of Jane (daughter of Revd Ebenezer Morris) to Revd Evan Rowland on September 26 at Llanelly Church.
1865 Margaretta Maria Morris age 16 years of the Vicarage died on April 10.
Edward Octavius Morris died in the 16th year of his age by the accidental discharge of his gun on December 28. Edward Octavius was the 4th son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris of Llanelly Vicarage.

1867 The Rev Ebenezer Morris died on April 18 1867 aged 77. A memorial to him can be seen in the parish churchyard.
On April 23 the Cambrian reported the death of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
1869 David Melvill Morris, bachelor, Clerk in Holy Orders, Llandovery (he was a son of Ebenezer Morris, Clerk in Holy Orders) married Isabella Eleanor Clifton (née Bell), widow, gentlewoman of Llyswen at Llyswen Parish Church in the County of Brecon (her father was Frank Bell, gentleman) on November 3rd.
Augusta Brudenell Morris, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, married John Rees Church of England priest, Llandovery District in the March Quarter of 1869.

1871 Samuel Sheppard Oakley Morris, son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, married Martha Anne Evans at Tregaron district in the March Quarter of 1871.

1874 Julia Rose Morris, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, married William Venour, surgeon in the army, at St Cadoc’s Church, Cadoxton, Glamorgan, on November 20.
1878 Ebenezer Morris married Catherine Davis Joseph (b 1861) at St Cadoc’s Church, Cadoxton, near Barry Glamorgan, on May 1st.
1878 Margaretta Maria Morris (née Jones) died at Cadoxton, near Barry, Glamorgan on 12 July and was buried at St Bleiddian Church, St Lythans, Vale of Glamorgan.
1878 On August 5th Revd Ebenezer Morris, son of Revd Ebenezer Morris of Llanelly, made his Will leaving everything to his wife Catherine Davis Morris.
August 9: “Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Margaretta Maria Morris, late of the parish of Cadoxton juxta Barry in the County of Glamorgan deceased, who died on the 12th day of July 1878 at Cadoxton juxta Barry aforesaid a widow and intestate were granted by Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice in the District Registry attached to the Probate division thereof at Llandaff, to the Revd Ebenezer Morris of the parish of Cadoxton juxta Barry aforesaid, Clerk one of the natural and lawful children and one of the next of kind of the deceased, he having been first sworn duly to administer – Effects under £200 – no leaseholds”
1885 Georgiana Marrianne (née Morris) Brown, wife of Revd Stephen Brown and daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris, died in Guildford, Western Australia, on 17 April.
On 13 May Revd Stephen Brown, widower of Georgiana Marianne Brown, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Mary Morris, died in Guildford, Western Australia.
1888 On 25 April George Rice Morris, son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, died at Malta and was buried at Pieta Military Cemetery in Malta. He was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery.
1890 Eva Hastings Morris (daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris) married Henry Goldwyer, Barrister, in the June Quarter of 1890. The marriage probably took place at Penally and it was registered at Pembroke.
1893 On 22 June, after a tragic collision off the coast of Tripoli between the battleship Victoria and the Camperdown – Revd Samuel Sheppard Oakley Morris, a Chaplain and Naval Instructor drowned and went down with his ship. (Samuel Sheppard Oakley Morris was the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris)
1895 On 23 Jan Caroline Morris (daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah Morris) died at Llwynbrain, Cyffig, near Whitland.
1899 Rees Goring Morris (son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris) married Augusta Helen Eloisa Irwin in the December Quarter of 1899. The marriage was registered at Bristol.
1902 John Innes, in Old Llanelly, included recollections of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
1903 Revd Ebenezer Morris of Cadoxton juxta Barry in the County of Glamorgan, Clerk – died while of unsound mind on 30 May. He was the son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris.
1903 18 April Administration of Will was “granted to Louisa Catherine Morris, the natural and lawful daughter and one of the next of kin of Catherine Davis Morris, for her use and benefit and until she shall become of sound mind”
On 30 April Julia Rose Venour (née Morris) married General Sir George Richard Greaves (this was her second marriage). The marriage was registered at St Giles, London
1909 On November 2 the Revd Evan Rowland died at King’s College Hospital, London and was buried at St Mary’s Church, Whitland. He was the husband of Jane (née Morris) and son-in-law of Revd Ebenezer Morris.
1915 In February Jane Lewis (daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah Morris) died at St Ishmaels, Carmarthenshire.
1919 On October 30 Jane Rowland (née Morris), widow of Evan Rowland (Church of England priest, died and was buried at St Mary’s Church, Whitland, Carmarthenshire.
1921 On September 20 Eva Hastings Goldwyer (née Morris) of 7 Queen’s Parade, Tenby, died at the age of 68 years of cardiac degeneration. The death was registered at Pembroke and the Informant was R. G. Morris, her brother, of The Rectory, Market Weston, Suffolk.
1922 Augusta Brudenell Rees (née Morris), the daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, died in the June Quarter of 1922 and her death was registered at Henley.
1923 On January 6, David Melvill Morris, son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, died.
1931 Rees Goring Morris, son of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, died in the December Quarter of 1931 at the age of 73. His death was registered at Kingston, Middlesex. He was a Teacher who later became a Church of England priest
1933 Julia Rose Greaves, daughter of Revd Ebenezer and Margaretta Morris, died on December 22. She was the widow of William Venour and married General Sir George Richard Greaves after the death of her first husband.
