John & David Jennings

John Jennings, Clerk to the Justices, conducted his practice from Mina Street, later renamed Queen Victoria Road. His son David Jennings, was born on 26 January 1877 and also became a Solicitor.

1866 The Postal & Commercial Directory listed under "Public Companies" the Llanelly Iron Shipping Company with its office at Station Road, Llanelli. William Henry Nevill was managing director and John Jennings was secretary.

1889 In October a meeting convened by John Jennings and David Williams Rees, solicitors of Stepney Street, Llanelli, was held at the Town Hall to discuss forming a company which would purchase the Glanmor Foundry started by John Powell.

1892 The Llanelly Mercury & South Wales Advertiser regularly reported on meetings of the Llanelly Harbour Commissioners, which were held at the Old Town Hall in Hall Street. A meeting held on Tuesday afternoon, 8 March 1892, showed that the following Commissioners were present: Joseph Maybery, Presiding over the monthly meeting; J S Tregoning junior; John Hopkins; John Griffiths; D Williams Rees; Joseph Williams; John Harries; W Davies; David Evans; D Thomas; D Francis; John Jennings, Clerk to the Commissioners; Captain Jones, Harbour Master and T F Rogers, Collector.

1877 David Jennings born and educated in Llanelli.

1899 Awarded his first Annual Practice Certificate on 23 January 1899.

1909 Arthur Evans was one of the most popular bank managers in Llanelli, having a host of friends, had succeeded in increasing business for the bank and employed more staff to cope with the additional workload. By this time Lloyds Bank was considered to be the largest bank in town. Evans was also Treasurer to the Urban Council, Harbour Trust, Education Committee and the Board of Guardians. At one time he was also a Sunday School teacher at one of the Church schools in Carmarthen and took an active part in Church activities in Llanelli.

In July ‘sensational rumours’ about something being amiss at the Bank were circulating in town and manager Arthur Evans was suspended. A week later Magistrates Ernest Trubshaw and Robert Margrave, accompanied by two bank representatives, the Magistrate’s Clerk, Inspector Rogers and David Jennings were present at the Police Court. An application was made for a warrant for the arrest of Arthur Evans on a charge of forgery.

Evans was apprehended on the afternoon of Wednesday 7th July and David Jennings, acting on behalf of the bank made formal application to the Court for his remand. David Randell acting for Arthur Evans asked for bail but sureties were not forthcoming until the following day. David Lewis of Caedelyn and Mr Sims a stockbroker from Cardiff came forward as sureties for Arthur Evans.

1920 Joined Helder Roberts & Company, conducting his business from Cowell Street. He was also a Commissioner for Oaths.

1923 Joined practice of William Edwards Williams.

1927-1928 Held the offices of Mayor of Llanelli.

1929 Jennings went into practice on his own around this time

1931 President of the Llanelli branch of the Law Society.

1942 David Jennings died on 29 April at the age of 65.
