Joseph Maybery was born at Landore, near Swansea, in February 1832, his father being Joseph Maybery, Engineer of Swansea.
He was a tinplate manufacturer for a number of years, and was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Carmarthen.
He was a Member of the Carmarthenshire County Council, held the positions of Chairman of the Llanelly Local Board of Health, and was a Member of the Llanelly Urban District Council and the Llanelly Harbour Commissioners.
He married Isabella Letcher, the eldest of ten children born to a prominent local family living at Wellfield, Old Road. Isabella’s father, Josiah Letcher had been one of the original founder members of the Board of Health in 1850. Isabella was the first Matron of the small hospital built on Bigyn Hill in 1867.
