Richard Peregrine

Manager of the Old Lodge Tinplate Works, Llanelly

Richard Peregrine

Was born in Swansea but when he was quite young he moved to Llandeilo where he was educated. He came to Llanelly in 1858 and served a term under the Llanelly Railway & Dock Company and was subsequently for some years with Messrs Joseph Douglas & Company, Timber Merchants and Contractors, Llanelly.

In 1865 he entered the employment of Messrs Phillips, Smith & Company of the Dafen Tinplate Company at Dafen, near Llanelly.

In 1870 he was appointed Book Keeper and Correspondence Clerk at the Old Castle Iron and Tinplate Works. He left them and undertook management of the Old Tinplate Works at Llangennech, but subsequently left.

When William Williams purchased and restarted the Upper Forest Tinplate Works in 1878 Richard Peregrine was appointed Assistant Manager.

In 1881 he moved to Liverpool to take up management of a Tinplate Agency Office for Messrs Edwards of Morriston. He continued there until 1891 when he was offered and accepted the position of Manager of the Tinplate Works, Glanamman.

In 1893 when it was decided to restart the Old Lodge Tinplate Works, again he was appointed manager.

He was for many years a Director of the Llanelly Building Society, a member of the Committee of the Science and Art Schools and was one of the Vice-Presidents of the Llanelly Mechanics Institute. He also served on the  Committee of the management of the Bigyn and Lakefield Board Schools.
