William Griffiths was born at Cardigan in 1851 and was educated locally. He was the youngest son of Dan Griffiths and the grandson of the Eynon Griffiths of Rhyd Galed, Pembrokeshire. The family were well known in the district, his mother and maternal grandmother having for many years kept a school at Cardigan.
He lost his parents early in life. His career began in the 1860s when he entered the office of the Mr R. D. Jenkins, Solicitor, Cardigan (subsequently Messrs Jenkins & Evans).
In 1871 he entered the service of Messrs Wilkins & Company, Brecon Old Bank, being appointed to a junior clerkship at the Haverfordwest Branch.
In 1889 he resigned the service and was appointed to the management of the South Wales Union Bank in the same town. This bank merged with the Metropolitan Bank. He was Treasurer of several bodies.
