The Constabulary

1908 Captain Dalkeith Martin Scott had died in 1899 and William Picton Philipps, son of the Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire (William Philipps), became Superintendent of the Llanelli Fire Brigade. He was Superintendent from 1899 to 1908 when he tendered his in resignation. From 1908 to 1940 William Picton Philipps, son of the previous Chief Constable was Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire.

1910 The Llanelly & County Guardian newspaper recorded the unveiling at Llandeilo Parish Church of a relief medallion tablet in bronze to the memory of Mr William Philipps, Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire.

1933 When a fire broke out at the Hotel Melbourne in Station Road hundreds of people flocked to see the blaze. Inspector Protheroe was in charge of public safety and was said to have marshalled the crowds in such a manner as to allow the fire-fighters to work without hindrance.

1947 On 1 April Carmarthenshire (County) Constabulary was established.

1953 In October plans were set in motion for a new headquarters when Carmarthenshire Standing Joint Committee purchased the site at  Waun-lanyrafon, Town Hall Square. After lengthy negotiations and delays due to national financial constraints, final approval was given for the work to be carried out.

1958 Carmarthenshire Constabulary was amalgamated with Cardiganshire Constabulary to form the new force Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire Constabulary otherwise called the Carms and Cards Constabulary.

1959 and 1960. Work began on the new Divisional Police Headquarters in Waunlanyrafon.
