The Constabulary
1908
Captain Dalkeith Martin Scott had died in 1899 and
William Picton Philipps,
son of the Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire (William Philipps), became
Superintendent of the Llanelli Fire Brigade. He was Superintendent from
1899 to 1908 when he tendered his in resignation. From 1908 to 1940
William Picton Philipps,
son of the previous Chief Constable was Chief
Constable of Carmarthenshire.
1910
The Llanelly &
County Guardian newspaper recorded the unveiling at Llandeilo Parish
Church of a relief medallion tablet in bronze to the memory of Mr William
Philipps, Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire.
1933
When a fire broke out at the Hotel Melbourne in Station Road hundreds of
people flocked to see the blaze. Inspector Protheroe was in charge of
public safety and was said to have marshalled the crowds in such a manner
as to allow the fire-fighters to work without hindrance.
1947
On 1 April Carmarthenshire (County) Constabulary was established.
1953
In October plans were set in motion for a new headquarters when
Carmarthenshire Standing Joint Committee purchased the site at
Waun-lanyrafon, Town Hall Square. After lengthy negotiations and delays
due to national financial constraints, final approval was given for the
work to be carried out.
1958
Carmarthenshire Constabulary was amalgamated with Cardiganshire
Constabulary to form the new force Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire
Constabulary otherwise called the Carms and Cards Constabulary.
1959
and 1960. Work began on the new Divisional Police Headquarters in
Waunlanyrafon.
