Cornish Arms

Cornish Arms, Seaside

There were two pub called the Cornish Arms. This one in Seaside, on the fringe of the town, was managed by John Shambrook in 1830.

According to Pigot’s Trade Directory of 1830 the other Cornish Arms was in King Square and the landlady was Mary Ball.

Boxing matches, some official and many unofficial, were held outside the Cornish Arms, where the car park is today. Boxing was often a way of resolving disputes, without resorting to costly court action, which the everyday working man could not afford.

In the late 20th century the name of the Seaside establishment was changed and the pub became the Bucket & Spade.
