Marshfield Tap, Station Road

(formerly known as the Station Hotel & Railway Station Hotel)

Originally the Marshfield Tap was called the Station Hotel and then the Railway Station Hotel and served the workers of the Old Lodge Ironworks established in 1852, and Marshfield Works established in 1863.

It should be remembered that when this hotel was built, the roads were criss-crossed with railway lines that connected the various works. There would have been a small station at the cross roads close to the Old Lodge Iron Works and the Marshfield Irons Works and this gave the hotel its name.

In 1867 David Thomas was the proprietor and the hotel was known as the Station Arms.

In 1897 it was listed in trade directories as the Station Hotel, Station Road, and in photographs taken early in the 20th century it was called the Railway Station Hotel. Its name was later changed to reflect the name of the Marshfield Works which subsequently became the Western Works.

According to the landlord (in 2002), like many other local premises built in the 19th century, the pub is reputed to have a ghost.
