Railway Tavern (Railway Hotel/Railway Inn)

Railway Tavern (Railway Hotel/Railway Inn)
The Railway Tavern was built around 1865. The side garden wall has an interesting feature – the darker lower part of the wall was built with copperworks slag, denoting an original feature of the inn. At some time part of the original slag wall was taken down and rebuilt with stone.
Sarah Williams was the landlady in 1867 and 1872.
In 1911 the pub was the scene of riots during the Railway Strike.
There were three pubs with railway connections, they were:
Railway Station Hotel (Station Hotel) near the Old Lodge Ironworks and the Marsh Field Iron Works. Railway lines linked all the works and there was a small station near the Pub hence the name. This is now known as the Marshfield Tap.
Railway Hotel now known as The Railway Tavern, by the Railway Station.
Station Hotel now known as the Miramar Hotel probably dates from 1830 – long before the GWR arrived.
