The Story of Carmarthenshire

Preface from the original book

It is with due humility I place this book in the hands of the public, and make no claim whatever to be regarded as an author, but merely a compiler.

In the course of extensive reading I found, scattered here and there, in books ancient and modern, abundant material, that only wanted dovetailing together for the construction of such a book. That I have attempted to do — with what success it is for my older readers to judge, and especially for my fellow-teachers of this historic and beautiful county.

Then, a residence of thirty-five years in Llandilo, in every sense the heart of the county, and a membership from its inception of the Carmarthenshire Antiquarian Society, have been of considerable assistance to me.

To the various publications on different localities of the county; to the best of the books bearing on it, or referring to men and events connected with it; and to the annals of the C.A.S., I am freely a debtor.

I desire also to express my indebtedness to the Carmarthenshire Antiquarian Society, Mr. W. A. Williams (Llandilo), Mr. H. Harris, the Excelsior Photo Co., Ltd., Carmarthen, Messrs. Burrows, Cheltenham, and others, for photographs.

That a book of the kind is long overdue must be apparent to all who have given any thought to the subject, and as no more worthy pen than mine set about the task, I have essayed it, and trust that my efforts will not have been altogether in vain.

D. MORGAN.

1901 Census     1891 Census     1881 Census

The information is sketchy but this is what has been discovered:

David Morgan married Mary Samuel in the second quarter of 1878 at Llandilofawr.
Mary Samuel was living with her parents, John and Catherine, in 1861 and with
her widowed mother in 1871.

There are too many possibilities for David Morgan born in the Swansea area
to locate him.

There are intriguing entries in the 1901 1891 and 1881 censuses.

  • The fact that Aldwyth Morgan was an assistant teacher in 1901 - was this
    Ffairfach?

  • The unusual names given to some of the children.

  • A possible marriage for John Samuel and Catherine Paget at Llandilofawr in the third quarter of 1848 which probably explains the Paget in the eldest son's name.
